These fractions are the first three in a series that will count 7. Images, gleaned over the years and exposed instinctively gradually met texts that accompanied me during these years. Each fraction is related to a text whose title is an excerpt. These fractions are independent thoughts. Together they form a whole, both self-portrait and testimony. They are composite elements which, taken together, reveal the nature of this journey.

abacuc
83mn b/w stéréo 2014
Italy
by Luca
Ferri
production : lab 80 film
distribution : lab 80 film
ABACUC is a man who weighs 198 kilos. He lives alone in the last house of a dead-end street. He doesn’t speak, and he is the living representation of Piero della Francesca’s paintings. ABACUC is constantly tired, unflappable. His daily routine is repetitive, his life is like a jammed refrain. Obsessive and repetitive, ABACUC is “the last man”, maybe a survivor. He spends his time mostly at the cemetery, in a theme park where famous italian historical locations are reproduced in miniature, or visiting utopian architectures. He receives phone calls from a mechanical voice. His idea of beauty resides, at home as well as outside, in the balance between the elements. He contemplates the formal rigour in brief moments of standstill contemplation. Nothing really excites him, except architectural debrises and ruins. The repeated visits paid by a woman, who stays hidden and with whom he communicates through literary quotes, seems to relieve ABACUC from his catastrophic solitude. But this is only another dead-end road: the female figure is only ABACUC’s double, and he is an eternal King Ubu. « Abacuc » is a film about the monumentality of ruins, where the concreteness of Super 8 film, the story, images and sounds compose a body similar to the one of it’s protagonist.

“I'm trying to make whatever is divine within me rise back up to whatever is divine in the universe”. (Plotinus) The technique of ecstasy still appears today in many religions and cultures throughout the world. All religions show great interest in the “holy ecstasy” and each based on her own manifesto follows a different path for its achievement. One of the oldest is the exercise with the breath, the sound technologies, dance and other forms of movement, social isolation, fasting, sleep deprivation, meditation, prayer, the use of phychotropic substances and other spiritual practices, that act out the holotropic states of the mind. The project "Chemical flower" is a reference to Beckett’s breathing examining breath as an ecstatic process of the consciousness emerging beyond the limits of individuality and its unity with the whole. The video shows a peyote cactus breathing in and out, creating a virtual illusion.

The context of the conflict is withheld, allowing a viewer to face his/her own emotions and reasons. The setting acts as a hall of mirrors, so each person and movement exists across time and space in several places at once. This story tells that human identity with its perceptions and reflections, is a many-sided and fascinating phenomenon.

The material was largely 1980’s-era educational and propaganda films that contained a broad range of content, but had only subtle variations on more or less the same leader. Foregrounding the often ignored hand-written or machine printed artifacts found on leader, the imprints become the primary source material for a psychotronic audio/visual salvo set to an original score.

EUX/THEM is a collection of interviews with primatology researchers. In 2013, I have met a dozen of French primatologists to question them about their work. Through the four chapters of the film, they open up to me about the philosophical and political dimension of their vocation. They talk about their field work : their life in the tropical forest for months, even years, extremely isolated, and the rediscovery of their senses — smells, ears, instinct. They share their vision of the unproved boundary between Man and the other animals, facing the progress of modern ethology. They mention the issue of the language, acknowledged to be unique to human beings, despite the success of the experiments of researchers who taught ASL (American Sign Language) to apes during the 1960’s. Their words recall Deleuze’s notion of « devenir animal » (« becoming animal ») : how the researchers need to forget, during their mission time, their condition of man or woman, in order to study these species in their environment.

« Fractions » is a seven part film. Seven sequences, each with a pattern and a reference to a text of a political nature, to create a space for reflection on the scope and responsibility of these images. Between self-portrait and testimony, each fraction is an autonomous thinking, remaining yet necessary to the overall restitution of a personal research on film practice, in correlation with the emancipatory thinking. The images then become a pretext for this reflection, freed from their narrative and documentary nature, the site of a more intimate experience. This work draws the accomplishment of several years of reading, strewed with fleeting moments of reality captured instinctively with my camera, all reworked and remodeled with traditional cinema tools.

The video "Immagine" is the story of Eve and the forbidden fruit. The first of many stories of the Old Testament in which food is involved. A religion story which takes cultures and immemorial traditions texts and evokes two wonderful trees whose fruits are able to give knowledge and immortality. Cautionary tale, common to all religions, which sets scenes constant and unfailing links between religion and food, between food and prohibits, between prohibited and transgression, between transgression and punishment. The use of secrecy, mystery, dogma, and the divine law by religions. A human construction of a system of obstruction against the legitimate hunger for knowledge and freedom.

A crossing of Istanbul, in its streams, unceasing movements, its inner rhythms. An Istanbul taken in its sleepless vibrations. A town made of contrasts and oppositions, between Orient and Occident, Tradition and Modernity, Order and Chaos, the individual and the crowd. In its centre , between the West and the East : the stream, the crowd, as a mass spreading in total fluidity. In the mesmerism of what is turning, as a perpetual movement, a sleepwalking vision. In its series, its beats, in the rhythms provided by the editing , independently of any sound track, the image itself generating the sound, interwoven with the rumors of the city, to the drone of the megalopolis.

However, in a sea of human habitation, stormwater and sewage systems are in continual degradation. These affected areas still remain with much natural splendor despite manmade strife. After a precarious course, Jones Falls empties into the seemingly immaculate Inner Harbor as its main tributary. There is with strong reason to stay hopeful about the future health of Jones Falls. Berlin. Grisha, a Russian-German boy, fools around with a wooden stick toy gun. The longer he plays, the further he is thrust into an altered reality. The boundaries between the past and the present, the real and the surreal, start to blur. Images from bygone Berlin appear; streets and buildings still carry the memories of war. Suddenly, he is caught in a nightmare of another lifetime, nightmare that is still present today. “Come & Play” is a film about the memory of a place. Time does not disappear and the past does not go away. Everything coexists in one moment.

The multiplication table which everybody knows is seen as the text which makes us difficult to focus on in the variations with the national anthems, like dissonance of the great powers surrounding the Korean peninsula. The Dadaists’ chaotic age when 'Le Retour a la raison'(film by Man Ray) was made in the early 20th century closely resembles what we look like today. It is a world where things that were simple came complicated and to produce a film is still in this world. To the world and the experimental films, it is necessary to return to reason.

"Line" explores the concept of the symbolic border between what apparently exists and doesn’t, represented through the idea of the delimitation between life and death. The scene portrays and makes emphasis in the line that separates what is alive from what has departed, of what still keeps existing confronted with what memory stopped making present. This way the reflection of calling out to see on what side of the line is where one really lives is established, either where one is supposedly present because there is air to breathe or on the side where one is confined and inert.

The Device is everywhere, It has no boundaries, ready to crush our anxiety and squelch our boredom with its constant stream of disjointed solicitations. It removes us from our present reality, thrusting us into a dream world of total engagement and minimal thought or emotion. The Device is available to us 24/7. A nurse shielding us from pain. In life the levels are unclear, milestones are often unannounced. Our value and meaning to others, to the world is in question-but never our relationship to The Device. The Device returns us to a womb state of nominal variables and maximal comfort. Other humans are disappointing, but The Device never lets us down. There is no awareness of The Device. Unless it isn’t there.

Since 11 March 2011, all living beings is united by fate, a fate such unspeakable order that exile is impossible. The people of Fukushima-Daichi with their identity and history had to leave room for the roots of the disaster. Social issues, natural reality, the original space in the nuclear disaster lose their meaning, become more total abstractions. In the disaster, man and animal species become infinitesimal. Achieving filmic and musical composition « Tiny Wildlife » plays on the multiplicity of reporting entails this upheaval between the micro and macro, between an organic and figurative frame emergences. The drift of the banks, the views under the sea, the sky, or flush with the ground, « Tiny Wildlife » is pictorial and musical expression of this parachuted glance inhospitable land that bears the traces of exile and its alive look that resists in a fragile body-to-body with life remains.

« Mirages » was filmed in a residential development on Montreal’s South Shore and in the surrounding agricultural lands. We are gradually transported from one site to another, going from a fertile meadow to a desolate construction site. Transitory spaces appear, ephemeral places are set up; these metamorphoses evoke the urban sprawl that replaces rural life with suburban conditions. Those landscapes in mutation reflect the upheavals affectingour living environments and our ecosystems. They hold a mirror to the illusion of having the capacity to build when we do not even have the ability to dwell.

"I am in a dark situation and all I can say is that I am looking forward to our congress as to the slacking of hunger and thirst." (Fotini Tsalikoglou, excerpt from the novel, I Martha Freud). In his aim to interpret how the unconscious works, Freud suggested that it is distinguished by a structure that is divided into three parts, Id the ego and the Superego. Id, represents the motivations, instincts and biological needs and is inherent from birth. The notion of the ego is the logical part, it is not innate but it is cultivated through the accumulated experience. The Superego represents all the ethical and social values of the individual, being somehow a moral conscience. He also expressed that the interrelation of the three aforementioned parts define an individual's mental state. The project “My enemies” has as basic references Freud, Beckett and the theatre of the absurd conveying the three mental parts as real and divisive situations. The video shows three characters that discuss and collide with each other creating language games in an environment with a convivial character.

A melding of sound and image that explores both the emotional relationships and the commonality of their formal language. ''Ruins '' exposes the idea of obstruction by means of a visible or invisible limit. Falling back on the memory of what came down as the representation of the future destruction of what now exists, it reveals blockade through the concept of construction and the parallelisms found between erecting walls physically and the creation of social barriers, in this case reflected in the action of delimiting spaces and applying the same material in the individual’s geography to represent the analogy.

I shot this strand of Super8 movie film circa 1976 in Brooklyn, New York. It features the late Michael Sgan-Cohen, artist, art historian, philosopher, willing viewer of my early experimental films (vimeo.com/neilneedleman), and cheerful participant. Sgan-Cohen was my favorite art history teacher at Brooklyn College. He taught the subject like no other professor at the college—with an extremely deep sense of passion and a strong personal connection to the ideas. When I watch this film (which has become creepier over the decades) I can hear his booming voice and staccato Israeli accent. It should be more than obvious that I thought he had a fascinating face, too. Here's looking at you, Dr. Sgan-Cohen!

In her work the artist Milica Rakic is occupied with renewing memory by striving against the selective memory. She reexamines the relationship towards the recent past involving us in the critical dialogue by means of provocative messages – taken over and adapted from different sources . She plays with words, with interwoven public and political issues; critically thinking over the current picture of society. Her art work comprises philosophical, timeless, ironic and ambiguous thoughts which she brings in correlation with history, recollection, and the collective memory. In distinctly allegorical strain, she argues a culture dominated by short-term memories where past is unexpectedly present.

Virtual images of abandoned stages and theaters are the imaginary set of "actors" in their search for identity, for a role. It all starts with the view on the screen and ends up with the view out of it. By immerging into subjective viewpoints and perspectives observers become the observed ones. A role reversal is staged: the audience as a consumer and as a producer. "State of Stage" is an exploration of different "states" and conditions of stages, places of selfpresentation and self-manifestation. Through its virtual origin "State of Stage" tries to investigate the cinematic, performative and virtual space at the interface of cinema, theater and Internet, but also the question of their overlapping.

“Storm” explores the idea of the symbolically contained energy in environments that glimpse abandonment and void. Through a transforming agent represented by means of a white empty box that integrates itself to spaces in decay, it is sought to resignify their symbolic charge and configure the rectangular object into and element that fortifies and constructs; one that is metaphorically brought to life in a somber panorama. Likewise, the inclusion of the idea of water as a life giver is brought together to the concept of the contained energy within the box situating it as a catalyst that reverts the impossibility permeating the buildings in ruins.

''The fallen'' inquires in the concept of impossibility projected through absence as a factor that would make something exist or not. Making a reference not only to the 43 students of Ayotzinapa but also to the numerous amount of disappeared individuals in Mexico in the last years, images in this work denote an environment of oblivion yet of resistance in which it is sought to modify the idea that what is physically inexistent ends to have an effect or repercussion. On the contrary, the emphasis is centered in the force that the image of the sum of those disappeared sows in the collective memory and that, at the same time, intends to raise a voice, a voice that attempts not to “fall” in confined spaces but stay present and constant.

It shows men and women from its fishing community sharing their memories related to the sea and the islands before the construction of the Sihwa Wall. This wall - the longest tide embankment in Asia – and the homonymous artificial lake were constructed to improve the local industry and promote urban growth; however, these implementations had a huge impact on the ecological balance of these islands, and therefore over the lives of their inhabitants and traditional cultures. Long, contemplative shots of places and elements from the islands, such as the wide mudflats, fishermen’s abandoned objects and boats, their houses in precarious state, are intertwined with images of the participants talking to the camera. The community was broken up by capitalist growth and the film allows its shattered identity to be slowly uncovered.

On a theater set, actors repeat a scene from the play entitled ALL MY LOVE. They feel around, search, try to give life to their characters and to the situations. Sometimes they find, and the movie attends this transformation : the play results from work, the actor is the character, the set becomes the real stage of the world. But at any wrong move, any discrepancy, we go back to the actors and to stageplay, to work, to the creation of a play. Through the construction of a performance, the movie tries to capture this place where fiction emerges, is materialized, where, suddenly, fragile, unstable, it seems to drag us into the power of its truth and its ephemeral magic.

Their life consists of everyday actions performed in an almost ritual manner, without speaking a word to each other. However the twosome harmony is disrupted, by the vision of a similar looking third girl. The third girl starts to appear night and day out of the blue. Dressed in a balletdress, she dances to the distant sound of Mozart. They would rather surpress and avoid dealing with this girl that haunts them. But with the vision of the balletdancer, small boxes containing flies are left by the frontdoor as reminders, forcing them to take action and bury it.

USTHEMTHEMUS is comprised of statements extracted from sci-fi cinema in which characters attempt to articulate a boundary between humans and non-humans. Rather than establish clear definitions, these attempts instead reveal a slippery space of boundary determinations and reveal anxieties around difference, particularly when ‘the other’ begins to become the same…

Lighting up the morning sky a meteor detonated mid air over Chebarkul, Siberia on February 15, 2013. Existential shockwaves emanating from the explosion caused a momentary chaos, and catalyzed more desperate fears that it was perhaps signaling The End. The music in the work is by Russian composer Scriabin who composed Vers la Flamme — Towards the Flame a few years after the Tunguska event – a devastating explosion from a runaway comet or asteroid, whose impact was equivalent to 10–15 megatons of TNT – had occurred in Siberia in 1908. Hypothetical, but compelling connections between these events inform this work.

Arne Körner makes "small" movies without fantasy, reflections without excessively leading (he leaves this to the viewer in order to draw them in). It requires no “content” in the popular sense, due to his well-formed and masterful imagery which is full of content. VIEW POINTE contemplates an island; the rushing sea, bays, peculiar foliage and buildings are perused. It progresses as if it is a thriller, though it is the objects which are the focus – they create an exciting undertone; they describe, silently coaxing the mystery which the island is hiding.

The security guard he took hostage on the way in lead him to an empty studio, where cameras were rolling and the microphone was on. Meanwhile, the NOS building was evacuated, and screens went black. For the first time in 60 years the channel did not run the 8-o clock edition of the news. The word spread fast, and the absence of the news became the new news.

Yin and Yang - are polar opposite to each other, but yet related forces or principles. White yang - hard, hot, male, active and the black yin - dark, soft, cold, female, passive. In Greek mythology the male symbol is a bull, a female in German legends – a snail. The predominance of male changes a man into a beast – the furious bull. Female predominance - in a spineless snail. Only the balance of yin and yang leads to the harmonious personality.
